The Informed Body – NODE15 Exhibition

"The Informed Body” brings together works of art and design that explore the past and the present of the complex interdependence between the human body and technology.

International artists create utopian and dystopian body images, give insight into recent technical potentialities and offer tactics for critical and playful uses of ubiquitous technologies.

The exhibition materializes the theme of NODE15 and offers impulses for an implicit and explicit engagement with the festival’s leitmotif. The artworks on display attempt to negotiate the impact of mediatization on human interaction by debating the simultaneity of distance and proximity that occurs when one reaches out to the other through digital media.

In this manner the audience is invited to interfere with an intimate exchange between two wired lovers or to optimize their own social networks on the basis of physical feedback.

The very understanding of “one’s own body” is being challenged, as one can explore what it means to be another person and investigate technology’s promise to transcend material boundaries. This urge to overcome physical limitations appears repeatedly in the artistic wearables, interactive installations and performances included in the festival. The body is repeatedly examined both as a source of information and as an object of optimization. The artworks invite the viewer to engage in a mental and physical work-out, confronting them with the various modes of interaction, merging them with technology and posing questions about the ambiguous concept of the human body in augmented or virtual realities.
