Connecting Things to the Internet of Things
Learn how to connect all your devices, arduinos, mobile phones and vvvv patches to the internet of things and exchange information with ease.
As soon as media installations are spread across multiple machines, arduinos, phidgets, mobile devices and the like, handling messages and states of all devices can start to be a mess. But the good news is that within the field of the Internet of Things (IoT) Tools have been developed to tackle this problem.
During the workshop we will explore those hardware and software solutions to realize distributed multi device setups. In the practical part of the workshop we will focus on using MQTT a light weight, open source, publish and subscribe protocol. Essentially we will learn how to publish data to a central broker and receive those informations back based on specific so called “topics” which are some kind of news groups.
In detail we will:
Setup an MQTT server on an Rasperry PI and a windows machine.
Read sensors and control actuators connected to an Arduino Yún connected anywhere to the internet via MQTT.
Use MQTT with vvvv.
Exchange information with websites and mobile phones using MQTT.
As this is a Hands on workshop, feel free to bring a sensor of your own choice with you and let's see how big we can grow our vvvv IoT network.
